After graduation he became a professor at Yerevan State Conservatory, and in 1954 was appointed artistic director of the Armenian State Philharmony. As a composer, Arutiunian won acclaim at home and abroad for his works, many of which are quickened by the folk traditions of Armenian music. The Verdehr Trio was a chamber ensemble dedicated to expanding and promoting the clarinet-violin-piano repertoire. Founded in 1972 at Michigan State University by violinist Walter Verdehr, clarinetist Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr and pianist Silvia Roederer, the trio commissioned more than 200 new works and revived earlier repertoire. Their efforts included audio recordings, educational videos and publishing initiatives. Recognized for innovative programming, the trio received major awards from Chamber Music America and ASCAP and was featured in The New Grove Dictionary of Music. The ensemble retired after the 2014–15 season.
